Thank you and welcome to Part 1 of the federal guide to US income tax for F and J visa holders. In Part 1, I will provide you with some background information on the US taxation process. I will also discuss tax residency classifications, income tax rates, and the types of income. First, I will start by providing some information on the US taxation process. The US tax authority is known as the Internal Revenue Service or the IRS. The IRS divides income into two groups for taxation purposes - earned income and unearned income. Earned income is income paid for the ance of personal services, which includes wages, salary, tips, professional fees, and scholarship and fellowship funds conditioned on the ance of services. Unearned income, on the other hand, is income not related to the ance of personal services, such as investment type income like dividends. Earned income and unearned income together make up one's gross income. The IRS calculates an individual's tax obligation based on their gross income.
